Wedding Frame | " The reflection in the mirror was really popular in photography in Cambodia and we wanted to copy that style. The photograph was made in the room which my wife used to get ready for the wedding. The frame is the original from 1983."

A Borrowed Style | " We would gather by the lake near the mountains to spend time with our friends. This picture was made to mark the end of a years study. My class mates and I got dressed up, our clothes came from Thailand we had to wear their styles as we had nothing of our own."

The Bitter Taste of Salt | " I went with a friend to Kampot, we had a plan to start buying salt and sell it in Phnom Penh. We did it once but it just became to difficult and the competition too much we got forced out."

A Prayer for liberation | " my uncle got a scholarship to study in East Germany, when he returned he brought back a camera and took many photographs in our village. The man photographed was Ung Pheng, he was over 60 years old at the time the photograph was made,we had stayed in this area during the Khmer Rouge, we all sat together and would pray for liberation, we dreamed that King Norodom Sihanouk would return and bring peace."

The Khmer Rouge Sandals | " This photograph was made in 1981, its of me and my husband, we were married in 1979 after the Khmer Rouge. My cousin took this photograph in our village in Prey Veng Province. My cousin was part of the Khmer Rouge but he abandoned the fight. We still wore sandals from the Khmer Rouge, we had nowhere to buy new shoes. The sandals lasted for many years, during the Khmer Rouge I only got through two pairs and I only had to replace the straps never the soles. I still know how to make them, just give me a tire."

Soviet Exchange | " I went to study in the Soviet Union as an exchange student, this was very popular at this time with many Khmer students in Socialist countries."

Soviet Monument | " I was sent by the Cambodian Government to study Banking in the Soviet Union, many students went to study overseas as part of exchange programmes."

Thoughts of Angkor Wat | Combination Printing of a portrait and a landscape of Angkor Wat. This style of photography is still very popular in Cambodia.

Two Friends by the River | "During the summer we went to Kean Svay in Kandal Province. It was a time to relax with friends."

Family Portrait in the shade of the Monument | "The photo marks a family reunion, my sister lived in Battambang, when she came to Phnom Penh we felt it was important to mark this point on time."

Studio-Sunglasses | "Everyone was going to photo studios at this time, it was so popular, it was a dark time but people moved on."

The Couple in the Studio | " The Couple went to make family portraits, they also took their son but made separate portraits with him. The couple never had any wedding photographs made so these where the substitute photographs."

Father and Son | "He went to the studio to make family portraits with his wife and son. He decided to make a picture with just him and his son."

The Girl and the Guitar | "When I went to the photo studio I was able to select the style of the images, The combining of photographs was well known in Cambodia and very popular. I really like the combination of these two photographs."

1985 | " I had the photograph made in a studio in Ta Khmao in Kandal Province. Once I had the printed photograph i took it to a painter recommended by the photographer. The flower in my hair was added and some retouches, I think it looks much nicer than the original."

Motorbike Family Portrait | "We decided to make a family portrait, we were just by the Independance Monument and there was a photographer there making portraits. The photographer combined two photographs together to highlight our children."

The Unknown Photographer | "A group of friends went to Kampot, I was 24 years old at the time, one of my friends made this photograph as a souvenir, but I cannot remember who made the picture."

Indian Style | "Indian dramas were very popular in Cambodia during this time, they were subtitled in Khmer. The styles we saw in the dramas became popular. I went to a studio in Phnom Penh and had this photograph made."
