Rooftop Karate | " My sister did Karate and would practice on the roof of our house. She took up Karate because she was going to study overseas in the Soviet Union and wanted to be able to protect herself."

Military Muscle | " I was on a break and just decided to take my shirt off, just then my friend appeared with a camera, people say I was posing for the camera but that's not the case I was being natural."

The Campsite Waiters | " I was an orphan after the Khmer Rouge and ended up in Site 2 Refugee Camp. We could volunteer as waiters in the camp for when we had visitors come to the camp. We could not leave the camp we were surrounded by wire. People stayed in the Camps until 1993..I left that year and headed to Phnom Penh."

The Road Trip | " We had an American teacher for 3 months and he promised to take us all to Thailand before he went home, this was the first trip to Thailand for nearly all of us."

Cutting Out the Memory | " We were taken to Kampong Som with some friends of ours by an Australian family. The original photograph had my family and our friends in it, but we don't speak anymore so I cut them out and replaced them with a photograph of myself."

The Soldiers and Angkor Wat | " The year was 1988 and I had just become a soldier, I went to Angkor Wat with a friend of mine and we made this photograph."

Never Been To Angkor Wat | " I had never been to Angkor Wat so when I went to the studio and saw the backdrop I knew I wanted to be photographed against it. The photographs at the time were very expensive you only got 3 pictures for 1500 riel which was a lot of money then. I had to borrow the sunglasses from the studio."

The Painted Uniform | " The original photograph was in black and white but we had the colour painted in."

Sisters at Heart | "We would go to the same tailor so our clothes matched. We were not family but we felt so close and wanted to look the same, feel the same."

New Moto | " We had just bought a new moto, it was a used one and shipped from Japan. We paid in gold. It was important for us to make a photograph to remember this time. There were always photographers on Riverside in Phnom Penh so we went there to have these pictures made."

Portrait and Flowers before the Paint | " I had this portrait made in black and white, after the image was developed I had the colour painted in, it was the photographer who actually painted the picture."

Painted Portrait and Flowers | " The original photograph was black and white, I wanted to turn the photograph into colour. It was the photographer who painted the picture."

Damaged Elegance | "People would make photographs and have multiple copies made and exchange them with friends and relatives." NOTE: Photograph has been damaged on the right hand side by a series of scratch marks.

Two Brothers in the Park | " We were in the park next to Independence Monument in Phnom Penh. There was a photographer there and we decided to make this photograph."
